Martha and Clinton Bourland reside in Aberdeen. They maintain the entrance and grounds of the farmhouse. The fenced in the yard keep deer from eating the azaleas, trees, scrubs and flowers. Clinton feeds the fish daily in the stocked ponds.
Amos Rye, my grandfather, originally owned this land in the 1950’s. My sister, brother and I spent our summers at Coontail roaming the woods, riding horses, and fishing in the farm ponds. For many years the land was farmed growing soybeans and cotton. Pine trees were planted in 1986, converting most all open land to forestry. My mother, Martha Bourland, inherited the 200+acres and has shared the land with her three children. She and her husband, Clinton, maintain the house and grounds where various varieties of trees, colorful azaleas and flowers bloom.
My family and I live within 50 miles of Coontail and I am the overseer. I recently retired from BASF as a Wildlife and Forestry Consultant. Now my free time is spent on a tractor or in the woods burning off food plots. My brother, Richard, owns Magnolia Bottled Water in nearby Columbus, MS. My free time is spent on the tennis court however he too enjoys the outdoors. Martha Jane, our sister, lives on the island of Antigua, where she pursues her love of the ocean and scuba diving. She has published several books on her diving experiences and is a freelance writer for numerous magazines.
Most holidays the family continues to gather on the farm at the original farmhouse built by grandfather Rye. Whether hunting the forests, fishing in the stocked ponds, or entertaining friends, time spent at Coontail makes lasting memories.
